IRVINGTON TO CELEBRATE EARTH DAY
The Township of Irvington's annual Earth Day celebration will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at Town Hall, located on Civic Square between Springfield and Clinton avenues. The festivities will kick off at 9 am with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Earth, which will be followed by a workshop on the planting of tublings and by cleanups in the municipal complex on Civic Square and at Irvington High School (IHS).
A kite demonstration by Theresa Allen will entertain the attendees from 9 am until 1 pm. Students will subsequently leave Town Hall for the county's annual Earth Day commemoration at the Essex County Environmental Center in Roseland.
The Irvington kite demonstration will be repeated from 2-4 pm at the Irvington Neighborhood Improvement Corporation (INIC), the township's social services agency located at 346 - 16th Avenue, at the corner of 20th Street. Students from nearby Grove Street School, under the auspices of October Hudley, a teacher at the elementary school, will participate in planting and litter abatement activities at INIC.
The 2008 Earth Day is spearheaded by the Irvington Department of Public Works's Recycling & Clean Communities Program, Aubrey Malvasio, coordinator; with assistance by longtime Irvington resident and environmental advocate Charlotte Galla, chairperson of the Irvington Junior Environmental Club; and Green Effect, the environmental club composed of sophomores, juniors and seniors at IHS.
In honor of Earth Day, an environmental exhibit will be featured at the Irvington Public Library until the end of April.
Transportation to the environmental center is being donated by Jimmy's Transportation in Irvington.
For more information about Earth Day, call Malvasio at (973) 399-6697.
