IRVINGTON RECEIVES GRANT TO
BOLSTER FIRE PREVENTION
Local investigators at the Irvington Fire Department were recently awarded a fire prevention grant of $3700 from FM Global, a leading property insurer of the world's largest businesses.
The department will purchase three laptops and two camcorders to boost investigative, training and prevention efforts, according to Gary Shumlich, Irvington fire chief and director. "This will help firefighters respond more effectively and efficiently to incidents in the community," he added.
"The grant is an affirmation of our endeavors to date. We are committed to providing the best services possible to our constituents, whether it involves public safety or any other area of concern," Mayor Wayne Smith said.
Because fire is the leading cause of commercial and industrial property damage, FM Global has contributed millions of dollars to fire services and related agencies working to prevent fire in their communities for more than three decades. Through the company's highly competitive Fire Prevention Grant Program, grants are awarded quarterly to fire departments-as well as national, state, regional and local and community organizations worldwide-that best demonstrate a need for funding, where dollars can have the greatest impact on preventing, preparing for and controlling fire in the community.
"At FM Global, we believe the majority of property damage is preventable-not inevitable-and we are pleased to make funding available to organizations, like the Irvington Fire Department, that share the same philosophy," said Michael Spaziani, senior staff engineer and manager of the program. "After all, it's much better to prevent a loss than to recover from one."
Established in Rhode Island for more than 170 years, FM Global provides property insurance and related loss prevention services to one out of every three Fortune 1000 companies and similar-sized organizations worldwide. The company advises such leaders in industry on how best to prevent damage and business interruption from fire, natural catastrophes and other risks in an ever-increasingly fragile and competitive business environment.
