WATER COMPANY CONDUCTS
AUTOMATED METER READING PILOT PROGRAM
IN IRVINGTON
System improves billing accuracy, reduces costs
and increases consumer confidence
IRVINGTON, NJ - New Jersey American Water (NJAW), the state’s largest water utility, is completing the conversion of Irvington’s manual meter reading system to an Automated Meter Infrastructure (AMI) system. Irvington is currently the only New Jersey municipality selected for the pilot program.
Launched in October 2005, Irvington’s AMI system reads customer meters using a mobile monitoring system. Radio waves sent from customers’ meters broadcast water usage data to company vehicles equipped with special read devices. Only vehicles with these special devices can read customer water use data. NJAW selected Itron, a company with more than three decades of experience developing innovative metering solutions for energy and utility companies, to help implement Irvington’s AMI system. The Kentrel Corporation, a company with more than 20 years’ experience maintaining and installing water meters, will install customer meters. The installation of AMI will reduce inconveniences to customers, speed reading and improve billing accuracy.
“I applaud New Jersey American Water for an innovative approach that brings convenience and efficiency to the residents of Irvington,” Mayor Wayne Smith said.
The company plans to complete the Irvington project later this year.
