IRVINGTON HEALTH DEPARTMENT
HOLDS SPRING HEALTH SERIES
The Township of Irvington Department of Health announces its Spring Health Awareness Series, being held from March through June.
Sessions are scheduled every other Thursday at Chancellor Specialty Care Center, 155 - 40th Street, Irvington (across from 40th Street) Park from 7 pm to 8 pm, preceded at 6 pm by the meet and greet portion of the evening.
"We are proud of this initiative that will present information of critical importance to the health and welfare of an urban population," Mayor Wayne Smith said.
The themes and topics are as follows:
March 29 --- Acute and chronic diseases such as hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes and arthritis will be the focus of guest speaker Laura Hargro, MD, clinical assistant professor of UMDNJ's Department of Family Medicine and medicine specialist at University Hospital.
April 12 --- The consequences, prevention and cessation of smoking will be discussed by guest lecturer Kerron Roberts, partnership coordinator for Empowerment through Prevention.
April 26 --- This session will focus on the reduction of obesity and the significance of good nutrition. The guest speaker is MaryAnne Kokidis, MA CHES, Senior Health Promotions Coordinator for Amerigroup, a managed healthcare firm.
May 10 --- Behavioral health and resources to address the issue will be the focus of a session headed by LaVerne Williams, outreach coordinator for the Mental Health Association of NJ.
May 24 --- Substance abuse and resources to address the issue will be the topic of a session led by Frank Baffige, LCADC, LPC, PhD, a mental health clinician for UMDNJ's Behavior Health Center .
June 7 --- The prevention of lead poisoning will be discussed by Sandy Harris, health officer and director of the Irvington Health Department, and Steven Marcus, MD, medical director of the Statewide Poison Information and Education System and professor at UMDNJ, and a medical toxicologist at University Hospital.
June 21 --- A session on cancer prevention will be held by Margarette R.N. Bryan, MD, assistant professor of medicine at UMDNJ and an oncologist at University Hospital .
