SORORITY HONORS MAYOR AS MAN OF THE YEAR

Mayor Wayne Smith was honored as the “Man of the Year” by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. at its luncheon held on March 25, 2006.

The Gamma Omicron Zeta Chapter selected Smith for his “outstanding tenure in governmental leadership and community service,” according to Sharon E. Pearce, chapter president.

Established in 1953 as the first chapter in northern New Jersey and the second oldest in the state, Gamma Omicron Zeta works to enhance the Essex County community through education, scholarship and service. Proceeds from the luncheon will fund scholarships for college-bound females and a variety of community development programs.

The event’s other honorees were Jorelle S. Green-Smith, Zeta of the Year; Donna Kay McFadden, a student at Montclair State University and 2004 graduate of Irvington High School, Undergraduate of the Year; Valerie A. Jones, Amica of the Year; and Shari Canzius, an IHS sophomore and Archonette of the Year.
