Irvington Mayor Wayne Smith was bestowed with an award by Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. at its Annual Public Meeting, held on July 23, 2006 at the Adams Mark Hotel in Dallas.
Recognized for his distinguished record of public service, Smith was presented with the award, “Providing Selfless Support,” named in honor of Evelyn Hawkins Hood, who rose through the leadership ranks to be elected as the (former) 14 th Grand Basileus, international head of the organization.
“I am deeply touched and humbled by this honor, especially one that pays tribute to one of the great leaders of Sigma Gamma Rho,” the mayor said in his acceptance speech.
“This sorority has made a positive impact on the lives of impressionable young women through the hallmarks of public service, leadership development and education,” he added.
Founded in 1922 at Butler University in Indianapolis, IN, Sigma Gamma Rho, Inc. was the first sorority of black women launched on a predominately white campus. It has grown into a successful, thriving organization that unites diverse women from various professions to further its mission, “Greater Service, Greater Progress.” There are more than 450 chapters in the United States, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Africa and the Virgin Islands.
