ANNUAL IRVINGTON PARK JAMMFEST ON TAP

The 8 th Annual Friends of Irvington Park Musical Jammfest will be held lakeside at Irvington Park on Saturday, August 12, 2006 from noon to 8 pm; the raindate is Sunday, August 13.

Performances at the free event will be given by R&B groups The Philly Intruders and Silver Stars, and by R&B soloist Lady Cici; the Latin Sound; Team Ambassadors, a reggae group; and the Mass Choir of Christian Love Baptist Church in Irvington. Other attractions include children’s, horse and pony rides.

The event was “created in celebration of the beauty of Irvington Park and to raise public awareness about its preservation as a family- and community-friendly environment,” according to Essex County Freeholder and Irvington Council Member D. Bilal Beasley, who serves as event coordinator; Irvington Council Member Sandra R. Jones is the chairperson of the Friends of Irvington Park.

Operated by the County of Essex, the 24-acre Irvington Park has received a number of upgrades during the past few years. A $1 million project in 2004 brought improvements to the tennis courts, walking track, basketball courts, tennis courts, softball fields and park entrances; in 2003, a rubberized surface was installed at the playground and the lighting system was upgraded; and the 2-story field house, home of the Irvington Amateur Radio Team, was renovated and expanded for $900,000 last year. The park is also a site for the Althea Gibson Tennis Program.

Vendor spaces are available for the 8 th Annual Musical Jammfest. For more details, call (973) 375-0337 or (973) 372-2224.
