The department governs the maintenance and structural integrity of residential, commercial and industrial properties in the township. This mandate is achieved by conducting inspections, upon which certificates of occupancy and habitability are issued—through the division of Building Construction—which also issues permits for plumbing, electrical and construction work. The zoning division reviews permit applications for compliance with township codes.

The department is responsible for the demolition of properties deemed unfit for human occupancy or use, and it provides emergency relocation assistance when necessary. Further, it is charged with the reduction and control of the rodent population. The department’s “No Heat” hotline is in effect from October 1 through May 1. Copies of zoning maps and ordinances are available for a fee from the Office of the Municipal Clerk.
